Something I heard said repeatedly by the leaders of the former church should have been the noose that hung them out to dry, yet the blind, who are thus led by the blind, eat up the words of a charismatic leader like chocolate covered coffee beans. They always said, “You must judge an experience (such as a dream, prophesy, etc) by the Word, you can’t judge the Word by an experience.”
In the words of Frodo, “And it would seem like wisdom but for the warning of my heart.” The same people uttering those words taught doctrines, requirements, commandments of men and self-proclaimed levels of authority over man never to be found in Scripture. Hypocrites? They claimed to be the only judge of the experience, at the sacrifice of the Word.
The hypocrisy is always clear in the revealing of cults when their deeds come to public scrutiny. Normally, this comes in the form of legal action, lawsuits, or scandals. In my case, the church leaders were found in violation of child labor laws, using church youth without paying them for laboring in their commercial business.
Why? To teach them good work ethic of course. So honorable… There is always an honorable layer of truth and reason over every lie, and yet with a simple moment of clarity, it can be destroyed. How do you teach good work ethic by defrauding someone of their pay? Even Jesus declared the laborer is worthy of his hire (pay).
They were then likewise sued for defamation because they were found slandering the character of the person who brought this scandal to light, attempting to prop up their righteousness in contrast with his/her depravity. The problem was, they told the sound man to stop the recording so what they said couldn’t be spread abroad, and someone’s ears perked up, and that someone started recording with their phone.
Eventually, they [the leaders] settled out of court, paying a sum of money to silence the detractor. The reason it was found out, is that they tried to hide it like all evil deed-doers do. Using a verse they love to use;
But if ye will not do so, behold, ye have sinned against the LORD: and be sure your sin will find you out. – Numbers 32:23, KJV
The featured image is from The Family, a mid-1980’s cult based out of Australia, whose founder Ann Hamilton-Byrne was kidnapping children from followers and raising them as her own. I was also studying/watching documentaries about the Yahweh Ben Yahweh cult, a Judaic cult from the same time. In both cases, religion was the cornerstone, teaching righteousness in the name of God.
Innocense and Purity of Doctrine was a driving force that gave them justification to do horrible things. The ends always justify the means. Right?
The real problem is the experience is so much more important than the Word in these situations. In my own personal experience, confessions of family members, and examples from hundreds of other people, the evidence of wrongdoing (I call it evil) is outweighed by what ‘I felt’.
I can’t believe it is wrong, because I know I felt…
Those people really seem to care about me, so I can’t believe they are wrong…
I can see they are violating Scripture, but they truly love people…
They may be doing things I don’t agree with, but I won’t sacrifice the how I feel when I go to that church…
These are actual sentences people have said to me, this week.
The Word is sacrificed for the Experience
Act 20:26 Wherefore I take you to record this day, that I am pure from the blood of all men.
Act 20:27 For I have not shunned to declare unto you all the counsel of God.
Act 20:28 Take heed therefore unto yourselves, and to all the flock, over the which the Holy Ghost hath made you overseers, to feed the church of God, which he hath purchased with his own blood.
Act 20:29 For I know this, that after my departing shall grievous wolves enter in among you, not sparing the flock.
Act 20:30 Also of your own selves shall men arise, speaking perverse things, to draw away disciples after them.
The followers of the Family gave their children to the leader, who was giving them LSD and other drugs, and neglecting them. Yahweh ben Yahweh was having his follower’s murder detractors and taught that only black people were the descendants of the Israelites. Yet, in all these cases, they gain hundreds and thousands of followers, they seem to prosper, when their intentions should be so obvious…
These are wolves in shepherds clothing. And think not, that just because the abusive structure we may find ourselves in are not killing human bodies that they are any less devious. What is more important, the human body, or the human soul?
As expressed in my recent article, Modern Scribes and Pharisees Matthew 23:15 declares the outcome of this system that sacrifices the Word for an Experience;
Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye compass sea and land to make one proselyte, and when he is made, ye make him twofold more the child of hell than yourselves. Matthew 23:15, KJV
He that winneth souls is wise if you win them to the right cause and for the right reasons! Proverbs 11:30
I humbly beg you, do not allow yourself to willfully sacrifice the Word for the Experience! Manipulators will push you into a corner of dependency that will make you believe the experience they offer supersedes God’s Word. That it is a New Revelation or a Hidden Truth that God gave only them, and you need them to get it.
The Word of God has been made plain, and simple so that babes can understand it! What once was a mystery is now revealed to you! If you allow goosebumps to override the Word, we are made weak and can be tossed to and fro by every wind of doctrine!
That we henceforth be no more children, tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of men, and cunning craftiness, whereby they lie in wait to deceive; Ephesians 4:14, KJV
Seek ye first God, His Kingdom, His Word, His Purpose and His Spirit. If your experience lines up completely and unequivocally with that, you are on solid ground. If it doesn’t continue seeking until you find it, but do not give in and compromise the Word!
God bless you in that seeking.
