What is true today has always been true for humanity. It seems baked in to our nature to want to add things. To want to work things out on our own. We simply cannot fathom the reality that it is All In Him and is not of our own doing.
We must however, make a dividing line that what is ‘evil’ is not a grab bag of inventions, ideas and opinions. In this study we’ve looked closely at what Scripture declares evil. As the late R.C. Sproul said in a video titled The Idolatry of Legalism, he succinctly said that when you add anything to God’s commandments, you are ultimately taking away from them.
There are prosperity preachers today teaching that we are all gods with creative power. There are dogmatic preachers today teaching that unless you sow a seed (give them money) God can’t and won’t bless you. There are weak preachers today teaching that God is love and so a loving God would never judge sin. All three heresies are the result of bad hermeneutics and poor Bible Study techniques.
But truly – the mission of Christ, his Apostles, early disciples, and plan for the entirety of the New Testament Church was the feeding of the body and soul! The Work of the Church was to be in charity, in love, and in bringing the hope of the life to come while supporting the one we are in!
We are currently living in a day when not only are false prophets and fake teachers found in Bible-believing circles but moreso there are blasphemous teachers who masquerade the Gospel in their private jets and crystal palaces with claims of prosperity, health and wealth, slick sermons with make-up camera-ready faces preaching another gospel than what the Apostles one and for all delivered to the saints.
Does the Bible teach that a woman cannot cut her hair by any length, and that a man cannot have hair longer than a few inches? In our Vague Dogmas series, we identify Christian beliefs that are not grounded in Scriptural truth or are cherry-picked Scriptures misused and clumped together incorrectly to create a vague dogma.
Imagine a church in which the leader decides who you date, what clothes you wear, in some capacities what job you work at, how you do your hair, where you purchase a home, who you can befriend or fellowship, what books you read, what you listen to, so on, and […]
Admittedly, this is going to be focused on my Pentecostal background and how Holiness in Hebrews 12:14 was twisted to equal a dress standard. Holiness is a word and concept found many times in Scripture, which signifies how important it is to God. Yet, so many have taken a word, plopped it […]
Are we [Christians] guilty of Cherry Picking Scripture? I think it’s probably true for all of us, each denomination, category or flavor. We know who we are, what line or verse resonates with our ideas, so we sort of…make it…Our Scripture! I even wonder sometimes if we know we are […]
