Let’s digest this verse, found in Luke 14. This is important because I personally know families that have been torn to shreds over denominational stances, with players in the story using this verse as justification for why they can Biblically separate and tear their families apart with justification. The reality is, Jesus gave us a beautiful verse that has been abused, misused and made ugly.
No wonder that when Jesus spoke of the parable of the wedding feast in Luke 14 he said, “Go out into the hedges and the highways and compel them to come, that my house may be full!” I spent 15 years of my life in Christ believing and being taught that God wasn’t anywhere to be found except at 1145 Wallace Road. You couldn’t go to the beach, the mountains, the park, the bar, and find Christ, and most certainly, you couldn’t be a light for Him in those places – your work, His work, ALL the work, was in Church.
The NAR – New Apostolic Reformation was a term first used by its main apologist C. Peter Wagner to speak of what he believed to be the restoration of, or more accurately, the Second Age of the Apostles. We see in Scripture an ending of the Apostolic line – starting […]
The truth is – we are emotional creatures – God made us that way. We respond to life with emotion. It is emotions that help steer us. Fear, angler, Joy, and Love. We know certain music can stir our emotions. It’s known that when women watch a good Romance, you better have a box of tissues nearby – they become overcome with emotion.
That Grace IS, as notated in the Amplified Bible version quoted above, God’s unbelievable, and unmerited, unearned drawing, that isn’t warranted by any outward holiness, works or sacrament we perform, or pompous self-righteousness (that as best is as filthy rags to God) that we can do.
This is why the word ‘Cult’ stretches far outside the realm of religion. Many organizations and individuals outside of any religion can be cult leaders and many have existed in the past and present. The most extreme current example is the government of North Korea and it’s leader Kim Jong-Un.
Context is everything. Systematic studies in theologies and doctrines, proper hermeneutics and correct understanding of Biblical or any other ancient/historical writings require it. Context is a way for us to determine a few important purposes that surround writings. Who was it written by, who was it written to, and what […]
The longer I have been removed from organized religion the starker the contrast between the message of Christianity and the visible church (application) of Christianity has become to me. As I study the history of fundamentalism, evangelicalism and the later rise of the charismatic movement (more on that to come in […]
