A Moment of Faith

Have you ever caught yourself in the middle of one of those coincidence moments and wondered was this really coincidence? Was God somehow in the moment, working things out for good, increasing your faith? Sometimes the answer comes at a later date, when you have had time to consider the moment, sometimes you just know right then that what others call Coincidence, you call Providence.

These are Moments of Faith that I believe God intends for you to build up your most holy faith. It is in these moments that you can pray in the Spirit, connected in true belief that God has you in his eyes right at that moment. (Jude 1:20)

“And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.” – Romans 8:28, KJV

One of those moments for me was nearly 16 years ago. My son, who is now 22, was turning 6 and I had just received custody. We were in a financial soft-crisis at the time, as I had used every penny (and traded my meager motorcycle) to pay for lawyers, filing fees, etc. I cared not, and would have worked three jobs for the joy of the moment. I found a local two bedroom apartment for my son and I to make our home. As a single father, we needed very little room or luxury. After first & last month rent payment plus deposit, we were broke. Rent at that time was $635/month which seems low compared to today, but for us then it was a lot.

After getting into our apartment, moving in beds, couches that had been donated, a small glass top table and wobbly chairs my parents gave me – and setting the tiny air conditioner in the dining room window – we sat down to our first day in our new home. I had gathered just enough change to wash some laundry since school was the next day for my son. My son stayed in our apartment while I put clothes into one of the shared washers in the laundry room and went back inside.

We only had one problem in the mix of all this joy – the only thing (literally) in the fridge was a small half empty box of baking soda the land lords left to control odors.

My son had eaten earlier, I knew breakfast was served at school, and so was lunch; for the day we had it covered. If memory serves me correctly, pay day was just a couple days away so I knew we would get through it. Besides, we had really good friends with open door policies right around 6pm every night. That is the bachelor circuit! I was hungry but I’d been hungry before, I’ve been hungry since, and since I’m writing this article…it obviously doesn’t kill to be hungry.

Well, to shorten to story, later I went back to our shared laundry room to put the clothes in the dryer. As I got to the bottom of the load I found some green, wet folded cash . I gingerly pulled it out, not wanting to tear it, then I spread apart the bills. A twenty, a ten and a five. $35 – more than enough to buy some basics at the store for the night, the morning and a few days. Bread, milk, cereal, cheese, deli bread. More than enough for a dude and his boy!

Now my conscious was torn – was I being blessed, or was someone else losing $35. I surmised God knew what he was doing, that perhaps there was money amongst our clothes that I had misplaced or forgotten. Either way, the coincidence was unmistakable – it became a Moment of Faith and a story I’ve told dozens, perhaps hundreds of times to build Faith in a God who cares.

A Moment of Faith can come the significant moments, like finding some lost cash – in the last breath of a loved one that you prayed to be present for. They can also come in seemingly insignificant moments in life – but where they come, consider them not coincidence, but the hand of a God that cares ultimately about your well being.

“Consider the ravens: for they neither sow nor reap; which neither have storehouse nor barn; and God feedeth them: how much more are ye better than the fowls? And which of you with taking thought can add to his stature one cubit? If ye then be not able to do that thing which is least, why take ye thought for the rest? Consider the lilies how they grow: they toil not, they spin not; and yet I say unto you, that Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. If then God so clothe the grass, which is to day in the field, and to morrow is cast into the oven; how much more will he clothe you, O ye of little faith?And seek not ye what ye shall eat, or what ye shall drink, neither be ye of doubtful mind. For all these things do the nations of the world seek after: and your Father knoweth that ye have need of these things.” – Luke 12:24-30, AMP
